On 25th April 1995 and 11th October 1995 two conferences were held on the theme of work and
poverty, in Cambridge University (UK) and the KU Leuven respectively. They were jointly organised by the Von Hügel Institute of St. Edmund’s College, Cambridge, and the Centre for Economics and Ethics, KU Leuven. Both organisations undertook to prepare two papers for each occasion and, just as importantly, when acting as host, to assemble an interdisciplinary group of participants who were in close contact with labour market developments in their own country.
In five articles, and this introduction by the organiser of the link-up, this issue of Ethical Perspectives conveys the flavour of the discussions that took place on those two occasions. (Elchardus is the only writer who was not connected with the conferences, but his work is included here because its content is judged to fit the debates of those days remarkably well). An Appendix gives the reader the list of participants at the conferences and the full list of speakers on each occasion. |
